Religion and the Same-Sex Marriage Push

Why is this even a problem?
The NY law put in religious exemptions; that is, presumably, religions will not have to perform same-sex marriages, if their doctrine is opposed to it.
So, despite being able to marry civilly, gays cannot then force the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) to marry the couple.
Is this sufficient? MORE:
